Understanding the Different Types of Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays are a helpful part of maintaining a healthy smile. They allow your dentist to see areas that are not visible during a regular exam, like what is happening between your teeth or below the gums. There are several types, each with a specific purpose, and all are designed to support your care using low-exposure imaging.

Bitewing X-Rays

These are the ones most people are familiar with. Bitewings show the upper and lower back teeth in a single view, helping your dentist spot things like decay between the teeth or changes in bone levels. They are typically taken once a year during routine checkups, depending on your individual needs.

CBCT Scans

A CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan captures a detailed, three-dimensional view of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. It provides a clear picture of bone, nerves, and tooth positioning, helping your dentist plan treatments with precision. This type of scan is especially useful for dental implants, orthodontic care, or assessing more complex cases where extra detail is needed.

What to Expect

Dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation, and your dental team follows guidelines to keep exposure to a minimum. You may be given a lead apron to wear and asked to stay still for just a few moments. Most types are quick and easy, and your dentist will let you know if any images are needed. (You might not need them at every visit.)
